“The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights.” – Gloria Steinem
With the approach of International Women’s Day 2019 on March 8, and its theme of #BalanceforBetter, SB Partners recognizes that gender balance contributes to our future success. Much more than a “women’s issue,” it is core to what we stand for as a business and as business owners. We are stronger, more innovative and better at serving our clients because balanced representation, perspective, and opportunity for women and men is something we actively strive for. CPA Canada and CPA Ontario are led by women, and several leadership resources are targeted at advancing women CPAs. But as a company and as an industry, there is still work to be done to achieve gender balance, and we are committed to making it happen.
International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate women’s achievements, as well as reaffirming our commitment to tenaciously challenge bias. SB Partners’ celebrations last year included special purple bags for colleagues and clients, and a video of two female partners’ reflections from the perspective of women in the accounting profession
This year, we will be sharing experiences and thoughts on #BalanceforBetter via social media, as well as gathering colleagues’ ideas on how to achieve better balance in SB Partners. And if you are visiting our offices that day, there will be cake!
We also want to recognize the importance of International Women’s Day by doing something that makes a difference, locally and perhaps globally, empowering people and changing attitudes. I am pleased to share with you that SB Partners is working with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton and Hamilton to send a girl to the Me to We Take Action Ontario Camp for children ages 9-18 years old for a week this summer. Co-founded in 2009 by Craig and Marc Kielburger, ME to WE is a social enterprise selling lifestyle products, leadership training, and travel experiences to help fund partner organization WE Charity. The Take Action Camp is not your typical summer camp. It helps participants to discover their passion, build confidence and develop leadership skills. Our hope is that this will provide a child with an unforgettable experience that will inspire and equip them to take action on issues they are passionate about.
What will you be doing to promote gender equity in your own spheres of work and influence? We’d love to hear about it. Please let us know or tag us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
